Sharkbeams / Method

Observe before intervening.

The Sharkbeams methodology is used to develop Studies and commissioned work from the conditions already present in a place.

The method

SITE READ → TENSION →
SCORE → PERFORMANCE → AFTERIMAGE

01
SITE READ

What is already active here?

Before making anything, the place is observed as it already exists. Architecture, light, acoustics, materials, routes, boundaries, ambient sound, human behaviour and changes over time are documented through camera, audio recording, sketching and independent notes.

The aim is not to gather pretty references. It is to establish a baseline.

02
TENSION

Find the contradiction.

From the Site Read, Évian and Yuuki identify the tension or question already present in the environment: stillness / movement, public / private, control / accident, natural / constructed, visibility / concealment, noise / silence.

The theme should emerge from the place rather than be imposed on it.

03
SCORE

Turn observation into conditions.

The question becomes a spatial and performative score linking sound, body, image, camera, audience and architecture. Some events may be fixed. Others are conditional: an audience movement, a change in light, a sound in the environment or a response between Évian and Yuuki can trigger the next action.

The camera can operate as witness or intervention: establishing a stable baseline, or deliberately altering framing, proximity, obstruction and perspective as part of the work.

04
PERFORMANCE

Let the score encounter reality.

The score is performed without pretending the site can be controlled completely. Improvisation is permitted when it is a response to the place, the other artist, the audience or an unexpected event.

The location remains visible as an active participant rather than disappearing beneath production.

05
AFTERIMAGE

What changed after we withdrew?

The site is documented again. What changed physically? What changed perceptually? What did the audience do differently? What became noticeable only after the intervention? What failed? What happened accidentally?

Afterimage is the record of what remains in perception after the performance ends.

Research record

Before / after / joint note.

Each study keeps parallel records rather than collapsing both artists into one institutional voice.

Évian / Before → AfterSound, camera, space, behaviour, change.
Yuuki / Before → AfterImage, body, material, instinct, change.
Joint Note → Next StudyWhat was learned, what failed, what should be tested next.
Documentation

Evidence, not backstage content.

The camera and audio recorder are research tools. A witness camera can hold repeatable before-and-after positions; an intervention camera can become part of the score. Ambient recordings, sketches, field notes and performance footage make the chain visible: PLACE → OBSERVATION → QUESTION → SCORE → INTERVENTION → CHANGE.

The documentation can later become film, Study Book, score, exhibition material, commissioner evidence or the basis of a subsequent commission.

Commissioned work

Method first.
Then build for the place.
